Instructor training All training is provided by our fully trained trainers. Becoming an instructor is time consuming and takes longer than some adverts make out, our training is based on pay as you go method there are no large costs to pay out, we have an initial deposit for theory material and some training then we work at your rate. All training is conducted on a one to one basis, not unlike a driving lesson. Training is delivered in three sections. All our material – study manuals and reference books, CD-ROMs and DVDs – are endorsed by the Driving Standards Agency . This organisation leads our profession and set the strict standards of training and subsequent operation of all Approved Driving Instructors. The qualifying Examination to become a DSA Approved Driving Instructor is split into three parts. We refer to them as Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3. Each must be passed before you can move onto the next. We concentrate on each Part before training on the next, although we often overlap a couple of hours. This way, as you study Theory and Hazard Perception, you will have a Driving assessment (for Part 2) that may identify habits or techniques that you can work on in the meantime – as you drive in your daily life. Part One – Driving theory and hazard perception
This examination consists of 100 multiple choice questions on various subjects including The Highway Code, Traffic signs and signals, car control, basic mechanical questions, instructional techniques, the law, teaching people with disabilities and questions on the driving test. There is also a hazard perception test which is conducted at this time following a short break. This is a virtual drive on the computer where you have to recognise various hazards which are developing and you are required to identify these. This test is available in Theory Test Centres throughout the UK. Tests can be booked online for either weekdays or Saturdays (depending on demand). Part Two – Your driving ability This is a 1 hour practical test of your driving skills. It is a benchmark for what you will teach later. A commentary is not required, just good, safe and systematic driving. You will also demonstrate various manoeuvres – all the ones you will later teach to a pupil. The main difference between your Part 2 test and a pupil’s driving test is that you will be expected to perform to a higher level – a maximum of six minor errors. Our qualified, experienced trainers will lead you through the full DSA syllabus, and by the end of this section of our training course you will feel confident in taking the test. These Part 2 tests are conducted at various Driving Test Centres throughout the UK. Booking facilities are available online. Part Three – Your ability to teach
This is a 1 hour practical test of your teaching skills. The examiner plays the role of a pupil and marks you on how you teach a particular topic. There will be two topics within the hour, one will require to be taught as a beginner or partly trained pupil, and the other at a more advanced stage – either as a pupil within a couple of weeks of a driving test or a qualified driver undertaking a driver development course. Our experienced trainers will teach and guide you through all the competencies which you require to show on the test. Above all, the examiner is looking for you to come across as friendly, patient, knowledgeable and understanding whilst achieving your aims within the lesson. Trainee Licence In some instances it may be prudent to obtain a Trainee Licence. This is a government scheme that allows you to teach the public once you have passed parts one and two tests and have received a minimum of 40 hours part three preparation. Your training continues and you are then expected to take and pass the Part 3 test during the 6 month duration of this Licence. The DSA require that you be sponsored by a driving school as a trainee instructor, and also that you must receive all the training before you will be allowed to teach pupils. Clearly this will not suit everyone as most students will be ready to sit the Part 3 test around the same time as the criteria for the trainee licence have been met. However, it is an option which we are able to provide if you so choose |
